Sawdust from old sawmill sets, or shavings from planing mills, can help improve your farm.
Forrest Patton, asociate forester at VPI, says sawdust and shavings, with the addition of ammonium sulphate at the rate of 60 pounds iper ton, have beneficial effects when mixed with any soil. They; improve the physical as well as the chemical properties of the soil by forming humus
Sawdust and shavings also are acceptable mulching materials, as shown by their use in nurseries, orchards, and farms. 'Mulching in> sulates the soil and conserves moisture. It also keeps down weeds and grass.
Large quantities of sawdust, shavings, and certain other residues, are used in poultry houses. Coarse wood chips also appear to be an ideal form of litter.
