Governor John S. Battle today called upon Virginia motorists and) pedestrians to use extra care and! caution in traffic during the Christmas season.
“This time of year invariably sees a heavy toll of deaths and injuries,” Governor Battle said, “and this December will see also the Nation’s one millionth traffic death unless drastic efforts are made to postpone it.
“This millionth death will mark a tragic and disgraceful milestone in the Nation’s traffic history and will be’all the more sorrowful coming at the height of a joyful season. I am sure we do not want the eyes of the Nation on Virginia as a state which contributed heavily in hastening this tragic event.
“We must not have a repetition of last December, which saw 106 Virginia deaths, nor should we forget the many homes for which there are no cheer at Christmastime last year. I appeal to every citizen of the Commonwealth that he drive and walk with the utmost caution and consideration during the dangerous days ahead. May we all strive to postpone this millionth death and keep the horror of death or injury from our homes during the ho liday season.” --——
