Better Sires Contest
Rappahannock county, with a total of 94 meat anmal sires placed there during the last year, has ■been named winner of the 1951 “better sires” contest.
George Herring, animal husbandman at VPI, says the Rappahannock report shows a total of 56 bulls, 31 rams, and 7 boars placed in the county. Jtegi&teration name and number or each sire is required to count toward the award. The award is made on a point basis, with greater credit given for sires placed in counties of smaller livestock population. This tends to equalize the opportunity of winning, Herring explained.
The total sires placed in the project in 1951 reached a new high of 2,833 in 40 counties as compared to 2,133 in 43 counties in 1950. The total included 1*412 beef bulls, 860 rams, and 561 boars.
The contest is conducted by the animal husbandry department at VPI in cooperation with the codnty agents of 40 leading livestock counties in Virginia.
As the farm agent of the winning county, W. H. Lyne *wfll he given a trip to the International Livestock Exposition at Chicago, Illinois, next fall.
