Most people observe the admonition to spell out the names of states in addressing letters, thereby aiding the postal clerk as well as putting an extra guarantee on the safe delivery of the mail.
Abbreviation of the state can become confusing, what with individualism .in handvmting as it is. There’s Va., Pa., and Ga., and the possibility that the one distinguishing capital letter may be smeared beyond recognition by a drop of rain or a fingernail scratch. The capital letter O. might mean Ohio, Oklahoma, or Oregon.
The post office department reports there are seven cities named Pittsburg, three Pittsburgh, 23 Cleveland, 17 Springfield, 19 Jackson, 16 Independence, 27 Washington, and 18 Columbus. Without a clear state name after the city, the post office worker has no idea where to send the letter.
It is amazing how well postal clerks manage to deliver many packages and letters with addresses obscure and incomplete^ but it is up to the letter-writer to use a full and readable address .if Kb expects the mail to go through quickly.
