SYM'PTONS OF RABIES IN ANIMALS. Animals, affected with the vicious or furious type of rabies, are nervous and exciteable and in the early stages, will run away and shy at the slightest noises. They wander ^nany miles and at times will attack any man or animal that happens to cross its path. If they don’t die in a spastic fit at this stage, they twill then pass into dumb stage before death.
Animals affected with the dumb type usually do not wander or attack other animals. 'Paralysis sets in early, the jaws gape, swallowing becomes painful and finally impossible., Saliva drips from their mouths and within two or three days paralysis increases to such a degree they fall into a coma and die. Persons may become infected with this type in attempt* tog to treat the throat f the sick •deg, believing it ill from other cause.
Animals suffering from rabies are without fear and the disease apparently makes them insensible to pain; blows or gun shots do not frighten them. Rabid wild animals will enter farm premises and fearlessly attack dogs or humans.
Another characteristic of rabid animals is the tendency on the part of the animal to chew hard objects such as wood, rocks, or even glass. Horses and cattle will be nervous and exciteable and bite their stalls or mangers, sometimes hard enough to break their teeth.
