WHAT TO DO IP BITTEN BY A DOG. Rabies is contracted chiefly through bites. Immediately wash the wound with soap and water and encourage bleeding. This removes most of the saliva including the virus if the animal has rabies. See your doctor and let him decide whether further local treatment or vaccine treatment should be given.
WHAT TO DO WITH SUSPECTED ANIMALS. Even if the biting dog appears to have rabies it should not be hilled unless necessary but should be locked up for a period of seven days. This allows time for observation and prevents animals escape if he does 1 have the disease. An animal with rabies always dies within 10 days ■of beginning symptons. During the early stages of the disease it is often impossible to determine whether or not the animal is in- * fected, but if it dies or is killed labfe m cuseinftf laboratory diagnosis is fairly easily. Do not shoot the animal through the head or hit him on the head as the brain only* is used for laboratory diagnosis.
If a wild animal bites a domesticated one, it is advised to confine the animal bitten until an examination can be done on Hie animal biting. If this examination, is not possible it is suggested that the animal be confined for identification and a veterinaran be contacted regarding paateur treatment if animal is a valuable one. Sometimes the negri bodies which are characteristic of rabies do not show up in early stages of the disease. ^ 7 . 11
