“We assemble today under the proud and untarnished name of Virginia Democracy. We meet with unfurrowed brow, unashamed and unafraid, because the long and illustrious history of our people, running back to the very foundation of the republic, has been free of moral defilement. We meet in th confident and comforting knowledge that Virginia Democracy has kept the faith, has fought a good fight, and whether or not the battle is won, has continued to stand inflexibly for those imperishable principles of liberty so firmly established on the virgin soil of our 'Commonwealth.
“We have cast out from our presence those evil influences which would infringe upon our liberties, while others have succumbed to these same lethal ele ments by failure to examine and analyze their true nature and paralyzing effects. We have passed untouched the odorous fleshpots proffered by ubiquitous Federal officeholders for consumption by political rapscallions who have dragged the hitherto unblemished name of our party through a mire of corruption and immorality until the nation itself nears the brink of disaster. We can take courage in the knowledge that we did not yield to the blandishments of these traducers. We exult because our transgressions have been few and because the Democrats of Virginia have not been destitute of those qualities of mind and character which enable them to resist such tormenting minions of vice and veaality. .
