Soil Saver Notes
John S. Battle, Governor of Virginia, has again proclaimed, “Natural Resources Conservation Week,” to be held the week of October 19. All of the twenty-three Soil Conservation Districts in Virginia will sponsor various activities during the week. The supervisors of the Culpeper District are now making plans for contests, tours and generally outlining their program for the entire week. The Culpeper Soil Conservation District comprises the counties of Culpeper Rappahannock, Orange,, Madison and Greene.
Several Culpeper County farmers are asking advantage of the dry soil conditions by /constructing open ditches in normally wet areas by means of a bulldozer. Where conditions are favorable land can be drained with bulldozer constructed ditches cheaper than with a dragline.
Those farmers having participated in the drainage program this week include New'ton Lindsey of Brandy, J C. Geil of Raccoon Ford and Mrs. Ellen Burton of Brandy. Soil Conservation Service Technicians working in cooperation with the Culpeper Soil Conservation District—assisted the farmers in the location and design of the drainage systems.
This week is “National Farm Safety Week.” During this week everyone is being asked to recognige and eliminate the various hazzards around the farm that cause accidents. Approximately 1,500,000 farm folks received lost time or fatal injuries last year in the United States. This is a serious and costly threat to our agriculture:-Do youi pai t^=effminatc hazards that are responsible for most of the injuries on your farm.
