the ram sale held Monday at Winchester by the Virginia Purebred Sheep Breeders Association. Prices were from a third to half of what they were last year. Undoubtedly the heat kept a number of buyers away because the sheep business, though somewhat off from what it was a year ago, is still good. While your writer did not see every sheep sold . . . we missed a few while trying to contact some Rappahannock sheep owners via telephone . . . here is the way they sold: Top price $133.00 for Champion Hamp ram bred by Bob Sharp of The Plains . . . average price 26 Hamp rams $67.40; five Dorsets averaged $36.70; 3 Southdowns $61.60; 10 Shrops $45.00; Suffolks $79.50, and the only Corriedale we saw sold fetched but $32.50. With these averages you can readily surmise that several nice registered yearling rams brought little more than an early spring lamb did last May.
