'“Senator Byrd has opposed opening the coffers of the Federal treasury to the wastrels and the squanderers who already have debauched our currency and who would not hesitate to sacrifice the American people for their own selfish gain. He has stood for the solidarity and integrity of America and has resisted the venal influences which have enveloped the halls of our central government. He has had the courage to vote his convictions and has not sue cumbed to the pompous and arrogant Lilliputian leadership which has descended upon Washington, and which if allowed to remain in power, will result in the utter destruction of much, if not all, that we as American citizens cherish and hold dear. His only master has been his own conscince and the best interest of the American people. He has fostered the fundamental principles of our Founding Fathers. He has opposed to the full extent of his ability the spurious emanations from Washington bureaucracy. In the early days of this political orgy, he did not hestiate to defend singlehandedly the sacred principles of government established on the soil of Virginia, that pure and undefiled Americanism which we shall ever nurture with tenderness and care.
“When Harry Byrd began this fight, it was not a popular one. We hear now much about his “voting with the Republicans.'’ He did not vote with them then nor did they with him. What few Republicans were left either vanished or ran to cover, with our valiant Senator fighting the- battle alone with his customary patriotic zeal and determination. So successful has he .been, that well may we say in the language of the patriarch: ‘The stone which the builders rejected, the same has become the head of the corner.’
