First Known Republican Listing in County History; Hampton and Jackson Districts Remain Democratic

For the first time in known history of Rappahannock County, a majority of 101 votes for the Republican candidate, Dwight D. Eisenhower, threw the county into the Republican column.

In a total tally of 619 to 518, the traditionally Democratic *<‘Free State of Rappahannock” bowed to a Republican Party vote in four of the six precincts. '

Hampton Magisterial District (in and around the county seat of Washington) gave the Democratic nominee, Adlai E. Stevenson, 154 votes to the Republican 138. This 22 majority was followed by Jackson Magisterial District (in and * around Amissville) with a Stevenson victory of 90 jto 85 votes for the Republican candidate.
