Take a soil test now in the field where you are going to seed alfalfa next year.
W. H. Lyne, county agent, says a soil test is particularly important because alfalfa has higher lime and fertilizer requirements than do most crops. The pH test to grow alfalfa successfully should be from 6.5 to 7.0, which is higher that that needed for red or ladino clover. The pH test determines lime needs.
The agent explains that a soil test now will make it possible to apply the correct amount of lime, if needed, on the land this fall. Then the soil reaction will be right when the alfalfa is seeded in 1953. Where the pH is very low, lime should be applied at least six months before seeding alfalfa, and another soil test made before seeding. It costs between $35
