Stephens received a large majority over Republican Waitt, but this total was incomplete, lacking the Hawthorne distric report.
The Constitutional amendment Voted “for" almost Iwo-to-one in all districts except Hawthorn, from which no report could be reached by telephone yesterday.
In the vote for Lieutenant-Governor there were 26 write-in votes recorded for State Senator Raymond Guest, while Wakefield district wrote-in 56 votes for him, and Piedmont district wrote-in 9. This write-in vote has been explained, and yet, part of the story remains a mystery. So far as can be ascertained, there was no objection the Democratic candidate, A. E. S. Stephens. One Republican voter, wearing an “Ike" button, termed the Senator Guest Write-in as a “courtesy” or “complimentary” vote. When asked for what Senator Guest was being “complimented,” he replied, “For what he has done.” A Democratic Voter, wearing a Stevenson button, said, “We ‘complimented' him (Senator Guest) on his first term’s service in the State Senate by sending him back for a second term. What is this 'compliment* fort”
The reply came from the Republican voter: “For the stand he took in this election.” “Oh. ves.”
