Soil tests also will show the fertility level of phosphorus potash, and calcium. Alfalfa is a heavy user of potash. The test will indicate whether or not potash or phosphorus is needed other than that regularly recommended.

The agent points out that alfalfa is one of the best forage crops. In the past it has been used mostly for hay. Now farmers are using alfalfa successfully for grass silage and in their grazing programs.
Mr. Lyne also reports that seed of Williamsburg, a new alfalfa variety developed in Virginia, Will be available for seeding in 1953. It has been particularly outstanding in Southern Piedmont and the eastren part of Virginia. Williamsburg, Atlantic and Buffalo are the leading varieties in Northern Piedmont and west of the Blue Ridge.
