G. A. Allen, Jr., sheep specialist at VPI, says the need for more sheep in Virginia is illustrated by the imports of wool made to the state. He says there is no need for this because sheep fit like a hand in a glove into diversified farming.
A boom in beef cattle in the south is underway, but this need not exclude sheep. In an area where a farmer can’t pasture another cow, he can keep six sheep, because sheep eat 90 percent of the natural weeds at some stage of growth, while cattle will eat only 10 percent. Then, too, cattle will graze grasses sheep will leave, so pastures are better off with both sheen and cattle.
