An expected decline in beef prices this fall and winter, and feed shortage, add up to make this a good time to cull beef herds in Virginia.
Curtis Mast, associate animal husbandman at VPI, says for the past - five years cattle prices have been on a steady upgrade, and ifiost farmers have solid heifer calves rather than keep them for replacements. Now they have many old cows, poor milkers, shy breeders, and off-colored cows in the herds. ___
Now is* good time to select good heifer cows to replace cull cows. Further, “there’s no better way to stretch the already short feed supply than culling,” Mast says.
Farmers who are short of winter feed must remember that their beef cow herd is their “working capital,” and they must do everything possible to keep the good producers, but with the high price of feed this is no time to keep the markinal cows, he added.
Farmers who do not have enough feed to get their herds through the winter should make arrangements immediately to get protein supple ments to help stretch the roughage supplies.
