DRAINAGE External drainage is closely related to slope. Internal dnunage depends on the permiability of soil and the material beneath it or both. Excessive drainage exists where water is removed very rapidly due to steep slopes, course soil material or both and such soils are unsuitable for ordinary crop production. A well drained condition exists where water is removed readily but not rapidly. The soil may be mottled at a depth of several feet.

Amoderately well drained soil is one in which water is removed somewhat slowly. These soils have a slowly permiable layer within or just below the subsoil. Mottling occurs in the lower part of subsoil.

Imperfectly drained, with this condition the water is removed from the soil so slowly that it remains wet for long periods of time. This condition is usually associated with a high water table and a slowly permiable layer near the surface. It usually marks a depth of from 8’ to 16.” Poorly drained is a condition in which the soil remains wet much of the time. This is due to a slowly permiable layer, high water table, seepage or a combination of these.

Mottling usually appears at the surface with gray color predominating.
