The car I was in was bitterly cold, a fact that seemed to keep the train crew in high spirits, and the trip took approximately forever.

Eventually the train lurched sullenly into New York at precisely the hour when streams of angry, impolite people were competing for space aboard the absurdly inadequate and disgraceful commuter railroads. I weighed just about a pound or two less than J thirteen stone, but even armed with a heavy suitcase and a pair of hard-nosed boots it was still all I could do to wedge myself into one of the Long Island Railroad’s incredibly ancient and uncomfortable cars.
