About a vear ago your scribe’s imagination spawned the idea of pruning fruit trees with a tractor mounted mower. Eyebrows went up and grins creeped over faces of listeners teethe suggestion that such a pruning method might someday be S.O.P. in dwarf apple orchards.
RUT BEHOLD in the Decepiber issue of Better Farming Method* we read: “NEW FRUIT TREE HEDGER ADAPTED. Adaptation of a new fruit tree hedger to use in pruning apple and peach orchards marks a step forward in developing new, time saving, and less costly methods of producing these fruits, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The tractor-drawn hedger-pruner is used to trim tops and sides of trees into a square cornered hedge. Such hedges are expected to increase greatly the efficiency of orchard maintenance of fruit harvesting. The mobile hedger is easliv attached and detatched from the trietor, requires little power and the machine costs less than existing equipment.

Five full years of work covered by social security is enough to qualify a severely disabled worker for cash disability benefits, Miss Florence Schaffner, Field Representative of the Alexandria Social Security Office, reminded workers and their families. The five* years of work must be earned in the tenyear period just preceding the onset of the disability, and the disability itself must he of at least six (6) months duration and of sufficient severity that the insured worker is unable to do any kind of substantial work.
