Angels On Crutches
Angels on crutches with sparkling tinsel halos and feathery white wings hover over the Christ Child when the annual Christmas pageant is presented at Crippled Children’s Hospital in Richmond. This is a tradition at the hospital which gives free care to children from throughout Virginia who ngtd orthopedic or plastic treatment and whose families cannot afford prolonged hospitalization.
The Christmas pageant is under the direction of the three school teachers assigned to the hospital by the State Board of Education and the occupational therapist, - Miss Mary Elizabeth Blayney. A number of years ago, costumes for 'the pageant were made and presented to Crippled Children’s Hospital by the Women of Hanover Avenue Christian Church, including vestments for a choir.
A sight which never fails to touch the heart is the entrance of rife wise men bearing gilts. They are dressed in satin robes and usual!'' wheel themselves swiftly onto the stage, since it seems that none of the older boys can ever go anywhere slowly in a go-cart or wheel chair.
As Crippled Children’s Hospital , marks the Christmas season with its pageant, it also marks the end of the year with its Donation Drive totalling only 44 per cent of the amount needed to meet its operating expensees for the current year.- The Trustees are hoping that gifts durig the holidays may arrive as swiftly as the wise men in the Christmas pageant.
