The Poinsettia The colorful poinsettia, a native of the tropics, has long been an emblem of Christmas. Discovered in Mexico in 1828, the Mexicans called it “The Flower of the Holy Night” or “Flame Leaf.” The blossoms are not this “flame’’ leaf, but the small yellow flowers in the center.
There is an old Mexican belief about the Poinsettia. They tell there was once a beautiful young girl who had a broken heart. And as she cried, her heart cried too and the drops of blood fell to the earth, and a Poinsettia grew from every drop.
