herded like cattle, overcharged ..for inferior transport, delayed by abysmally obsolete rail cars, and made altogether miserable by a system that seems surprised by the fact that in the wintertime it snows.
There are just too many people around New York and every other big city; it requires organizations of a high order of complexity to feed them, clothe them, haul them to and from their inconsequential tasks, shrive them, heal them, and bury them. New Yorkers are so inter-dependent that a policeman can stub his toe in Jackson Heights and it will throw a, Harlem bookmaker’s budget out of balance for a month.
They wouldn’t put up with all this in Rappahannock County. There, the livestock Outnumber the people by a comfortable ratio. And in general, the people/^ re smarter , than cow-brutes, leaving a visitor to that cherished place with the impression that they mean to keep the ratio pretty much the way it is now.
