An old Irish superstition says that at midnight on Christma.s the gates of Heaven open, so anyone who dies can go straight to Paradise without- entering Purgatory first. Often, if people were dying but friends or relatives, thought the sick might last until after midnight, they were “helped along’ so they could get to Heaven before the gates closed.
