A helicopter demonstrating aerial spraying before a large group of Rappahannock County apple growers, crashed yesterday morning about 11 a.m. in the orchard of H. B. Winfrey at Woodville, Va.
The helicopter, an 'El TomcatMark II, owned by the Del Mar Va Aerial Spray Company of New Castle, Del. and operated by Dennis A. Rowe, Jr., was making its second run when a cable stabilizing the jet spray tubes broke under the copter and filted the overhead prop into an apple tree and crashed. The dangling cable was seen by the ground crew whose attempts to signal the pilot failed.
According to eye witness accounts the pilot, Mr. Rowe about 30 years of age of Wilmington, Del., was unconscious when removed from beneath the wreckage, but did not appear to be otherwise seriously hurt. He was carried to Culpeper Memorial 'Hospital by the Rappahannock Rescue Squad after being examined and treated on the scene by Dr. J. P. Snead of Sperryville. fie was later transferred to University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
The plane crashed about 300 feet up the slope from highway '522 and wreckage was strewn over a large area with fragmnts of metal, canvas and wood lying all continued on page twelve
