The Independent industry has been responsible for a number of major technical advances in the telephone field. The first practical automatic telephone system was invented by Almon Brown Strowger, a Kansas City business man, and its initial commercial application was made a little more than .66 years ago in an Independent exchange at La Porte. Ind. A few years later Independent Telephone Companies introduced the first dial telephones in a number of exchanges in various parts of the country, including a number of large cities such as Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Omaha, now being served exclusively by the Bell System.- Scores of important cities in which Independents operate exclusively such as
