Jack Rollins reports the periodic cicada (17 year locust) is expected , in the Valley this year. Possibly some may appear here. This insect can materially damage young apple trees in the stingina-«gg laying process. Control is had by spraying with 1 pound of Sevin per 100 gallons ten days after emergence. In young plantings it may be necessary to spray ground cover to insure effective control.

Damage by the weevil was slight on first growth of untreated alfalfa, however with warmer weather you can expect a decided increase in numbers of this insect. All alfalfa fields not treated with heptachlor last fall should be sprayed after new growth starts with methoxychlor at 1.5 pounds per acre or Malarhion at 1 to 1 *4 pounds per acre.
Calibration (knowing how much water you apply rcr acre) is a must in economical and effective •control no matter whether you are trying to kill alfalfa weevil or cont ol weeds. If you are not sure how much water you are using likely your concentration of materials is too mild or too strong. Either is costly. Come by and let’s discuss calibration.
