•Familiar to all is the succession of events whiich brought the Unittd States to armed conflict between the rival sections, the eleven States of the South and the States and territories of the Norththe secession of South Carolina in December 1860, followed by site other states; the organization of the Confederacy’ with Jefferson Davis as President; the firing on Fort Sumter and its surrender in April of ’61 ; the Virginia Convention passing an ordinance of sece?’ sion April 17, followed by three more states.
In the first days of the war Washington was shut in between Virginia and Maryland /and in danger, but by the end of April was secure against a raid. Federal troops crossed the Potomac May 24 and occupied the South bank of the Potomac for protection of the capital.
One week after Virginia had adopted its order of secession’ the “Old Guard” of Rappahannock County' one of the first military units to be called to the Confederate colors whose history dates back to 1812, left its huinr county and proceeded east to become a part of Company B of the 6th Virginia Cavalry, It was attached to Fwell’s command, yvlhich in May
