Rochester, N. Y., Tampa, Fla., Tallahassee Fla. Lincoln Neb., Fort Wayne, Ind. and Santa Monica, Calif, have pioneered many advances in the telephone field. Today approximately 90% of the independent companies are dial operated.
DDD started experimentally almost a decade ago in Englewood, N. J. Since that time millions of telephones have been added to the DDD network and it is expected by 1965 that about 95% of all telephones in vthss country vviU have DDD.
In order to assist customers to make their own long distance calls, District Manager, J. B. Compton stated that a Blue Book of telephone numbers has been mailed to all subscribers of the Virginia Telephone & Telegraph Company in this area. The booklet explains in detail the procedures to be followed when making long distance calls, and also contains a list of area codes for about 1700 distant points that can be dialed.
Direct Distance Dialing by customers is designed to speed up completion of long distance calls. Each year'the volume of long distance calU grows and facilities such as DDD are required to provide telephone usere with fast dependable service.
