On Restoring Clover
If ladino clover is fading from your orchard grass or tall fescue-ladino pastures, and the stand of grass is still satisfactory, you can reestablish the clover fairly easily, says W. H. Lyne county agricultural agent. Procedures for reestablishing the clover are outlined in Leaflet 21, now available from Lyne’s office. The agent says keeping a balance of about half ladino and half grass in tall grassladino clover pasture will improve the quality. Further more, the clover will furnish nitrogen for the pasture. In a beef grazing test at the Northern Virginia Pasture Research Station at Middleburg, the daily gain per head of steers was slightly over 1 / 10 pound more on ladino - orchard grass or ladino-tall fescue than it was on the grass without clover. The experiment further indicated that the clover furnished 150 to 200 , pounds of actual nitrogen per iacre annually. Applying j slightly over 200 pounds of actual nitrogen per acre to I straight grass each year, in \ applications ,rol . about 50 pounds each, resulted in an ; average of only 43 pounds of beef more per acre than was obtained from the ladino-tall grass mixtures without the application of additional nitrogen . Phosphate and potash were applied to each experimental pasture at the same rate.
