With the installation of Direct Distance Dialing in |une, 1962, long distance traffic has increased and Subscribers and placing a much larger percentage of calls today than ever before. In commenting on this advanced step in telephone growth, Mr. Compton stated that Washington, Virginia and the surrounding area bad 73 telephones in 1933 ahd 317 at the end of'*March 1963. The area served hy this exchange includes Flint Hill which'has seen a large percentage of the new homes built in Rappahannock County ^ and recently the addition of a new manufacturing contern.
