Government purchases of eggs in the past two weeks have served to bolster a sagging market in Virginia and nationally. However, no upturn of significance is likely until June. USDA buyers stepped into the market after the price for Grade A large had almost reached last year’s low of 25 cent a dozen, which was six cents below the low hit in 1961. The government purchased 1.7 million pounds two weeks ago and 1.3 million pounds last week. These purchases have stimulated buyers for breakers to become active and should serve to stabilize the market during the current seasonal increase in production.
