Bachant evolved the idea of using automatic cameras to record wild turkey abundance and distribution. He developed a self-operating camera unit, using ar simple box camera, the shutter of Which was powered by a mouse trap. A monofilament trip wire over a bait line was ued to spring the trap. Each bait line had two cameras, one behind the other with the trip wire. The wide angle camera was set to record the numbers in the turkey flock, the second camera gave a close-up picture of turkeys which had been captured previously and marked with distinctive leg bands. Badhant says the immediate use of the technique will. be to the wildlife manager; however, the work would also be of interest to anyone interested in wildlife photography. The equipment desr cribed is inexpensive ana easy to use.
