By knowing the amount of food available to a given number of deer, management plans (including hunting regulations and budgets) can be altered to meet the needs of a fluctuating deer population. Techniques and procedures developed in Patton’s project, which was conducted in the Jefferson National Forest in Craig County, can be used in other areas to predict browse production, thereby giving wildlife manager a standard system for determining carrying capacity. The hunter himself will benefit most by having a high quality of deer on a sustained yearly production instead of many small deer and fluctuating numbers. This, of course, will take time. Another graduate student from the Wildlife Research Unit, Joseph B. Bachant, discussed a new census technique that will allow one investigator t o adequately sample wild turkey distribution and abundance in a given area. His study involved 11,000 acres—a sizeable plot of land for one man to survey for turkeys.
