Where The Cork Was
A philosophical old Negro fisherman is reputed to have made the observation that “the prettiest sight in the world is the ripples on the water where the cork was". The rapid development of fishing tackle and artificial lures has tended to overshadow the age old method of fishing with a baited hook and a bobber to indicate the strike of the fish. However, some of our finest sportsmen continue to fish with natural baits. And there are many circumstances under which bait and bobber fishing can be the most productive method. Such is the case during August “dog days* when lake fish seek the depths and are difficult to reach with artificial lures, The most common mistake made in bobber fishing is to use a float (cork) that is too large for the fishing require ment. A good gauge is to select the smallest float that will re main on the surface of the water and still suspend the bait ed hook at the desired depth. A large bobber offers too much resistance to the water and can warn a spooky fish.
