The toxic portions of snake venoms are complex proteins, difficult to analyze. As posions, they appear to concentrate either on the nervous system or on blood. The neurotoxins are far more dangerous. Fortunately, the snakes most often biting people have the kind of poison that attacks blood. This is why the standard first-aid treatment concentrates on the use of a tourniquet to prevent the venom from circulating into the body. Again, contrary to public opinion, the use of alcoholic beyerages to counteract snake bite actually hastens the passage of the poison through the body. An estimated 1,000 to 2,000 people are bitten by poisonous snakes each year, but probably less than 2 percent of these die from the bite. Authorities believe that over 75 percent of the snake bites would not cause deathe, even if given no special care. Snake bite statistics compiled in the early 1930's indicated the eastern diamondback rattler was the greatest killer of people. Copperheads however, bite the most people. As far as bloat is concerned, North Dakota State -University reports brome and alfalfa apparently will provide safe pastures for dairy cows when the alfalfa content is as high as 60 or 65 percent of the total forage.
