Lightning Protection Check-Up Time Is Here

Lightning-caused fires destroy farm buildings, rural houses, and stored feed worth many thousands of dollars each year. It also kills over 400, people and causes 1,000 injuries in the nation, says G. D. Kite, agriculture engineer at Virginia PolytechnicInstitute.

Much of this loss can be eliminated with lightning protection installed on buildings. The protection can save the farmer money be preventing loss of life and property, and by reducing the cost of fire insurance. Each lightning protection system has three parts: air terminals, sometimes called rods or points; conductors; and ground connections. It is estimated that properly install ed systems give an effective 90 to 95 percent protection against lightning strikes. Farmers and homeow ne r s who do not have such protection should consider installing them. The place and time of lightning strikes cannot be predicted. However, an installation insures against a strike. The installation of a lightning protection system is a job for an expert in this field, advises Kite. It is poor business to depend on a salesman who has no local references, little ability, and unknown reliability, he adds.
