Once the war was over, once the rebuilding, the recriminations and the reminiscences had begun, Gardner compiled his and the other photographers’ best pictures and issued them in the “Sketchbook.’’
These photographs were not merely pictorial records; they were works of art, striking studies in composition and shadow and lines. And they were pioneering achieve ments, for they left today’s Virginia Museum visitors an eye-catching record of men and events and moods which modern news photographers find it hard to surpass. Almost all of the 29 selections on view at the Museum were taken in Virginia. They run from 1862 through the death of the Confederacy in 1865. The “Sketchbook” will be on view 2-6 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, and 8-10 p. m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, until August 31.
