Two Shootings

James Baxter, a migrant laborer from Haines City, Fla. was shot in the right leg Thursday morning, October 29 in a I labor camp at Mrs. R. B. Rust’s orchard near Flint Hill. Charged with the shooting is Charles M. Henry, a labor crew leader, who was booked with felonious assault and taken to Rappahannock County jail by Trooper W. A. Buntin. He was released the following day on bond. According to authorities, Baxter refused to work Thursday morning and demanded his pay for labor up until that time. When he made threats toward Henry, said Mr. Buntin, Henry shot him. Baxter was taken to Warren Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery and the bullet was successfully removed.
Another shooting occurred at Pine Knot Inn, a tavern located between Washington and Sperryville Sunday afternoon about 2:45. John Warren Clanagan of Jeffersonton was shot in the arm. Details of the incident were not available. Clanagans assailant has not been apprehended and the case is still under investigation. Officers investigating the shooting were Troopers Paul P. Dicks, P. W. Foster and his police dog, Duke, K. L. Miller and Deputy Sheriff Ernest Lillard.
