Mr. and Mrs. Harry Elphistone came from Washington, D. C. Halloween night to spend the weekend at their home in Chester Gap. After^tfifey left the highway at Benwenue and proceeded on Route 729 toward Flint Hill, they ran up on six large boulders which had been placed across the road at the crest of a hill. Fortunately Mr: Elphinstone was not driving too fast and was able to main tain control of his vehicle, a 1964 Country Squire, when he struck the barricade. No one Was injured, but consider able damage was done to his station wagon. Again, as the Elphinstones limped twoard their destination in their battered vehicle, they ran upon another blockade near Appalachian Inn, but saw this in time to avoid further diaster.
Every day we are reminded of the countless number of traffic accidents occurring on our highways and the tragic increase of fatalities result ing from them. Our police force exerts every efforts to help limit the toll and protect the law abiding innocent. In view of these fact6, it is impossible to fathom any reasoning from such actions by someone who must surely drive an automobile themselves. ( I don’t believe any little children walked out on a country road carrying heavy rocks.)
Halloween is a time of fun for youngsters, with, perhaps, a few harmless pranks thrown in. It is not meant for vanda lism or as an excuse to mutilate property and endanger lives of others.
