"In the fields," continues Jenkins, “the women do most of the harvesting work and a major part of planting the crops. Some of them also work as hired field laborers. They receive much lower wages than men, but they are often regarded as better workers.” The Indian men, says Jenkins have the responsibility of making all the decisions for the family. They also do the super visory work in the field as well as the actual plowing and making the land ready for planting. Often, says the IFYE delegate, the men will serve as baby sitters while the women are out in the fields.
