Highway Projects
Richmond -- Sealed bids for the construction of 21 highway projects have been requested by the State Highway Department for opening here March 31. The projects include six for which previous bids were rejected by the Highway Commission as out of line with the Department's cost estimates. Interstate system projects include an extension of the eight-lane widening and reconstruction of the Shirley Highway (1-95) between the Capital Beltway (1-495) and the south city limits of Alexandria, an extension of the six-lane Interstate 581 spur in Roanoke from Orange Avenue to Williamson Road, and 12 bridges on Interstate 81 in Rockbridge and Rockingham counties.
Primary highway system projects include an overpass of US 60 and the C&O Railroad tracks in Newport News on Arterial US 17-258, the relocation and dividing of Arterial US 211 at'Massies Corner in Rappahafincictr q&unty;, the reconstruction of Route 3 at Chinns Mill at the Lancaster-Richmond county line, and the reconstruction of Rte. 40 in Sussex county east of Homeville. Special detailed plans for handling traffic during the widening and reconstruction of the Shirley Highway which carries from 40,000 to 50,000 vehicles daily, provide for each phase of construction so that two lanes of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times. The 2.1mile, multi-million dollar project will provide three outside lanes in each direction and two center reversible lanes, and will take about two years to complete.
