The fourth race, the Mount Salem for ladles was the most interesting race of the day as it so forcefully demonstrated that anything can happen in a horse race. For more than half of the three mile course it appeared that Miss Virginia Beach on Jane’s Bid owned by W. L. Rochester, Sr. would run off with the Phipps Trophy virtually uncontested, but then leading by about 50 yards she took the wrong turn, ran off course, and out of.the running.
