The Veteran Administration is receiving pension claims from many older men who, according to law, are not veterans._
The beginning date of World War 1 was April 6, 1917 and the ending date was November 11, 1918. For VA pension purposes it must be shown that the veteran served 90 days or more on active duty during wartime. The 90 days could have begun prior to April 6, 1917 and extended into the wartime period, or it could have begun on or before November 11, 1918 and extended beyond the end of the war. If the veteran served with the U. S. military forces in Russia then service up to April 1, 1920 may be counted as wartime. There is another group which believes they are veterans of World War I but are not. These are persons who received “Discharges from the Draft.” Persons who were discharged from the draft are not eligible for any veteran benefits. They were sent to camp but failed to pass the physical examination for military service.
