“Watch the summer weekends," was the warning today from Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superintendent of State Police and Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, with the approach of the Memorial Day holiday. H§ noted that 213 people were killed last summer on the weekends between, and including, Memorial Day and Labor Day. One weekend in June and one in August saw 25 deaths each, while another in August saw 22. The average number of deaths on these weekends was 15. However, Colonel Woodson said that deaths for the Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends ran below average with 5,11 and 13 respectively. For statistical purposes, a weekend is set at 54 hours (or from 6 pi.m. Friday until' mid-night Sunday. Labor Day, falling on Monday, becomes a 78 hour weekend. "This indicates strongly to me," he continued, “that the public will heed warnings but has a tendency to relas between holidays. Every weekend, particularly summer ones, is dangerous. Of the 1,050 traffic deaths in Virginia last year, 485 occured on Saturdays and Sundays." The safety official gave the following advice for weekend driving, noting that it should V
