Crickets Cause Concern

Crickets have invaded many communities in Northern Virginia in recent weeks, causing much concern to residents and businessmen alike.

At present, entomologists at Virginia Tech are not sure why they suddenly have become a nuisance. The last such problem occurred in 1947, they report. There are no specific control measures for this pest when it invades homes and businesses.

However, John Amos, extension entomologist, suggests that roach control sprays be used once the crickets are found indoors. Outdoor areas can be treated with any of the approved grasshopper control materials. If large enough areas are treated outdoors, cricket population should be reduced.

Amos cautions homeowners and businessmen to follow label directions in applying any pesticide. Such materials should be stored safely and kept out of reach of children.
