avoid the excessive flush of growth which may occur if all of the fertilizer is applied in the spring. Also, the autumn application will help maintain the green color of lawns in areas having relatively mild temperatures during the winter.
For most lawns, use 15 pounds of a 10-10-10 fertilizer per 1000 square feet. Broadcast the material uniformly over your lawn at about the time of the first killing frost. To reduce the possibility of burning, apply fertilizer when the grass is dry. Even better, apply just before a rain or water thoroughly to move the fertilizer down to the soil.
Weeds may give you considerable trouble even though you try to crowd them out with heavy fertilization. Fall is a good time to spray with herbicides to kill most of your broadleaf weeds.
Use a mixture of 2, 4-D and dicamba for weeds like chickweed, dandelion, pennycress, plantain, wild carrot and yarrow. Use as directed on the package. You will be surprised next summer to see how effective these materials are if you do a careful and thorough job this fall.
Be very careful when using 2, 4-D or dicamba that you do not allow the spray to reach shrubs and flowers. These materials may seriously damage or kill some of your prize landscape plants. Therefore, use them with extreme care.
One more precaution, 2, 4-D is very difficult to wash from a sprayer. The equipment you use with 2,4-D should not be used for spraying your garden plants next summer. The small amount of residue which remains in the sprayer may ruin your prize flowers and vegetables.
