Cream together butter or margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Blend in vanilla. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Gradually add flour to creamed mixture, blending well after each addition. Turn out onto lightly floured board or pastry cloth and gently knead dough into large ball. If dough is too soft to roll, chill in refrigerator several hours, or until firm. Divide dough into fourths. Roll out each fourth to paper thinness. Cut out cookies with floured 2-inch cookie cutter. Decorate with colored sugar and small colored candies, if desired. Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake in preheated 350° oven 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove cookies to wire rack and cool.
