Control~of Weeds

BLACKS BURG-During the autumn is an ideal time to fertilize and control weeds in your lawn. These two operations are very important if you want vigorous green grass next summer. October is probably the best time for these jobs, but you can start in late September if you are eager and finish in November if other activities interfere with your garden and lawn work.

Lawns need regular applications of fertilizer to replace the plant nutrients which are lost from the soil by leaching or removed with clippings or thatch. The fertilizer you apply to your lawn will probably give greater benefits in proportion to cost and effort than any other management practice you perform.

The use of fertilizer will promote a vigorous growth ol grass which will help control weeds. A dense sod will reduce the germination of weed seeds and smother the young plants when they start to grow. A thick lawn will also tend to crowd out existing weeds and reduce their vigor so they are more easily killed with herbicide spray.
