Judging from the number of telephone calls there are a passel of doubting Thomases around here. Honest Indjun.. we are not going to have a 17 year locust i Cicada) infestation this year. Down country, it is the year of the locust. In the Falls Church area the lawns are a lace work of holes from which the locust have recently emerged. And tree trunks and low growing shrubs are covered with skin caseings. Last weekend the males were in full voice and the females were emerging. Honest, if we were going to be over run with locust in Rappahannock, we would have known it bv now.

Sevin and Malathion are two of the least toxic insecticides on the market. If used correctly and with little understanding of the pests you want to eliminate, these two insecticides will control mostj of the insects in the vegetable garden and on the shrubs and flowers around the home.

Suggest the use of Sevin as the regular pesticide to control the chewing insects such as potato, flea, bean and asparagus bettle.

Malathion is still effective in the garden for the control of sucking insects such as aphids and mites.

If you had a blight problem on your tomatoes last year, suggest you start a preventative spray with one of the fungicides such as Captan or Ferban.

Miss Ruby and several of the town ladies are justifiable concerned about the deteriorating condition of the Extension Office’s flower garden. If you have any extra annual oi perennial flower plants tc contribute, we would be verj appreciative.

See you at the Rappahannock 4-H Hone and Pony Show thli Saturday.
