Bicycles m Traffic
The Virginia Highway Safety Commission, through John 'T. Hanna, Director of the Highway Safety Division, has expressed its concern over non-observance of laws regulating bicycles in traffic.
The Commission issued a statement that it “Noted with concern the failure of many bicycle riders to abide by traffic laws relating to the operation of bicycles on the streets and highways of this state. In the interest of saving lives and preventing injuries, the Commission urges full compliance with these laws and increased emphasis on education of riders, as well as on enforcement.”
Hanna explained that Virginia law requires operators of bicycles to obey all laws applicable to operators of motor vehicles unless the provision clearly states otherwise. This requires that bicycles be ridden with traffic rather than against it.
If ridden at night, the bicycle must be equipped with a white front lamp visible from at least 500 feet in clear weather and either a rear red lamp visible for the same distance or a red reflector of an approved type visible from 50 to 300 feet when directly in front of automobile headlights.
He continued in saying that riding on sidewalks is illegal with the exception that cities with populations of more than 300,000 may authorize children under 15 to ride on designated ones.
Last year, Hanna said, eight people were killed on bicycles in Virginia, 384 were seriously injured and 226 were slightly injured.
